Zoox consists of Linda Game, Jo May and Becky Menday. Based in Chesham, they are a superb trio serving up a cocktail of new melodies and traditional tunes with a delicate balance of strings, wind and percussion.
Be prepared for a fabulous array of instruments from contrabassoon to congas. Exciting arrangements, great musicianship and infectious energy typify the performances of Zoox in a show which is guaranteed to entertain and enchant. In the recent past they have played at The Drawingroom and Tudor Folk Club to critical acclaim.
Whilst at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, in Cardiff, Linda was discovered by folk music! Since moving to Brighton 18 years ago Linda has played in a variety of bands with differing styles, from jazz and rock through to traditional music. Linda played for the Brighton based American Appalachian dance team Broken Ankles for 17 years and was one of The Kitchen Girls. She is the fiddle player with the rock group The Fold and is a member of The English Contra Dance Band.
Jo trained at the Royal College of Music. She began her career working with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and smaller groups including the Continuum Ensemble. A trip to Sidmouth Folk Festival sparked an enthusiasm for traditional music, and has led to her involvement with folk groups, including the ceilidh band Token Women and the European group Freyja. She is currently working with the trio, Tapatak, developing a range of exciting rhythm-based workshops for all age groups. With Zoox Jo draws on her knowledge of different traditions around the world, using instruments such as the djembe, bodhran, darabuka and congas.
Having listened to folk music all her life, Becky finally bought a soprano saxophone in 2001, and later the whistles, which opened up a whole new creative world for her. Initially playing for a klezmer band, Becky was soon adding her melodies to the wonderful percussive sounds of Kerry Fletcher and Jo May in Tapatak. Her musical influences particularly come from Klezmer and Eastern European Music, as well as traditional music from around the British Isles, contemporary pop and dance music. As a professional bassoonist, Becky played with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic and Glyndebourne Touring Opera.
