Artist Statement

I find myself drawn to working metal by the power of fire - in all its guises - to transform cold unyielding steel into fluid expressive forms.

The plasticity of the material when hot, the texture produced when burning through thick plate and heavy industrial beams with oxy-acetylene cutting equipment, fascinate and invigorate me to produce a range of forms.

Recent pieces utilize very contemporary techniques to produce inflated forms, again from industrial plate profiles. These forms embody the concept of literally breathing life into the cold hard steel.

The use of found metal objects is a key element in recent works. The use of articles that have outlived their originally intended function, but that have gained an extended future and meaning, is also a very important aspect in my work. Frequently these objects are used as found, but equally, they may be altered to suit their new purpose.

The latest and most important recent sculpture, 'Shadow of the Unknown' (illustrated), is derived from the shadow created by a small steel cross. This work is cut and forged from structural steel H section beams and thick steel plate.
