Description:
Our group was formed in 1948 under the name of the Dorothy Atwell Players.
Productions were staged at the Old Kings Hall in Hampden Road until 1958. Between 1958 and 1962, activities were suspended whilst members assisted in raising funds for the Community Centre, which has since been the Players venue.
The players produced two productions a year until 1972, when a third was added to encourage new Directors. In 1970, the players put on a pantomime. This proved so popular one has been performed each year since. In 1984, the players devised a separate touring road show in the style of the Old Time Music Hall. This visited local villages, Hospitals, Schools, and Old Peoples homes. The highlight of this venture was an appearance before an audience of 950 at the Palace Theatre, Watford, alongside the cast of ‘Hi de Hi’, for a one-night charity performance.
We have always supported the All England Drama Festival, performing a one-act play, and often progressing to the next round, winning many cups in the different categories.
Each year we hold several social events: - Car Rallies, Theatre Outings, Dinner Dances and others.
The Players now put on three productions a year, March, July, and December, with a Festival play in April and May. Rehearsals take place most Monday evenings in the main hall at the Community Centre. We always welcome new members from the age of sixteen upwards, who can join us in any capacity.
