Film Making Editing and Camera Training

John joined BBC TV News in 1968 as a trainee assistant film editor. He became a film editor and converted to tape editing when portable Electronic News Gathering equipment was introduced.

As a Chief Picture Editor, he was involved in the coverage of many major news stories. He travelled extensively, working in more than fifty countries, covering revolutions in the Philippines and Romania, wars in Beirut and The Gulf, uprisings in China and the fall of the Berlin Wall. He has also edited news specials and other programmes. Whilst working on the Newsnight programme, as well as editing, he managed the team of eight editors.

He has been involved in ‘multi-skilling’ as a sound recordist and cameraman.

As a trainer, he devised and ran courses to equip people from other disciplines with editing skills using Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro editing software. He was involved in training journalists in film making using DV cameras.

Since leaving the BBC, he has formed his own production company making films and running training courses both for companies and for individuals. Clients include the BBC, Channel 4, Skillset, and Urban Fox TV
